A superb terracotta rendition of Chloé, the celebrated figure that took the Paris Salon of 1873 by storm. Marquet de Vasselot's masterpiece—reportedly modeled on a young ballerina of the Paris Opera—was famed for its striking naturalism, so much so that it caused a sensation [and a scandal] among Salon audiences.

The seated maiden rests gracefully against a rocky outcrop, accompanied by a syrinx [pan pipes] and reeds, evoking the pastoral romance of Daphnis and Chloé. The sculptor's virtuosity is evident in the supple modeling of the figure, the delicate rendering of the face, and the richly detailed naturalistic base.
