Tansy ragwort has a mix of positive and negative traits and highlights our complicated relationship with nature.
It is an herb. The flowering parts are used to make medicine. Despite safety concerns, tansy ragwort is used to treat cancer, colic, wounds, to cause sweating and onset of menstruation, and for “cleansing and purification.”
For farmers it is toxic to cattle and horses as it contains alkoloids and also inhibits forest growth.
It is much loved by pollinators - bees, flies, moths and butterflies due to its Generous nectar production, and is in the top ten of nectar producers in the UK. It also provides a home and / or a food source for seventy plus species, many of which feed on the plant exclusively.
